New Krav Gym Update.

First off we want to thank everyone for their support. No one has complained in fact, we have had so much love and support. It amazes us how when someone is in need, people come thru. We have had help finding a new space, electrician’s, plumbers, engineer’s, architects as well as many concerned students volunteer their time and services. During construction of our new space a wall was removed that was a load bearing wall. No one knew that until it was partially demolished. Everyone thought it was a non-bearing wall. We had to hire a structural engineer to come and asses the problem and design a solution. We are having a steal beam installed to correct this. this delay has put us back a another week. We Promise that things will get back to normal and we will do what is needed to keep you all happy. We will offer a free seminar with a guest instructor, or do whatever is needed to keep our students. Without all of you we would have nothing. Please hang on a little longer while we work thru this. Call us if you have any questions. Thanks again for your continued support.

Also, thanks for the blessing for my new Grandson Rykien. He is a miracle. Other than the issue we expected, he is healthy and has a strong heart and good lungs. I know many have prayed for us and my faith has grown during the past few weeks. Having Rykien healthy makes all of these other issues seem like nothing. Zach and his beautiful wife are doing well and Zach is anxious to get back to teaching.

“trials are mandatory, misery is optional” I believe this 100 percent.

Thanks from all of the Evans Family

New Krav Gym

We are excited to announce that we have found our Krav Gym.  This facility is going to work out well for what we do and is bigger and nicer than the recent gym.  it is located in Sandy Utah at 8496 Harrison Street suite 113.  Harrison is approx 300 west.  Access it off of 9000 south East side of I-15.  we are hoping to hold classes mid week.  we will keep everyone posted.  The old location in Draper would not of been ready to hold classes for 6-8 weeks.  This forced us to find a new location and it turns out that this all happened for a reason.  Thanks for all of you support.

Benifits of training in Krav Maga

A healthy person is a successful person. This saying is very true not because it tells us that successful people are healthy but it tells us that if want to achieve success in life, it is important to stay healthy. Staying healthy comprises of many things, like eating a balanced diet, following a simple lifestyle, exercise, etc. Now everyone performs various types of exercises, from running to swimming, from cycling to aerobics, etc. Some people also practice martial arts, but has anyone heard about Krav Maga?
Krav Maga is a combat system developed by Imi Lichtenfeld as a tactical defense skill. Imi used to train people in boxing and wrestling with special attention on using hands to defend and attack and his combination of all these techniques led to the invention of Krav Maga. Please note that Krav Maga is different from traditional martial arts, karate or taekwondo. Today the applicability of Krav Maga is not restricted to armed forces or military personnel. With increasing awareness, Krav Maga is becoming a very innovative style of exercise that is attracting children, men, women and senior citizens as well.

Krav Maga uses a set of basic moves that help in proper circulation of blood in our body and keeps every part of our body engaged thus making it function properly. There are no fixed rules for this exercise. All it contains are different moves for neck, eyes, throat, knees, groin and other parts of our body. It is slowly becoming a popular choice for physical fitness, as it includes many cardiovascular, stretching and strength building exercises. There are many exercises like Lunges, Plyometric push-ups, Plyometric hops, kick boxing, punching, etc. In Krav Maga, emphasis is laid on speed, endurance, flexibility, accuracy and coordination.

Thus performing Krav Maga can definitely be an excellent option for exercising, but one needs to first learn these techniques. And learning the Krav Maga techniques means consulting an expert who can provide proper training and guidance. Do not perform these techniques by reading books or magazines or by seeing someone practice them on the internet or TV. It can prove to be risky, hence it is better to contact an expert and learn from him in the right manner.

Looking back on 2010

2010 was a year of many changes for our school.  the biggest change was moving to our new location.  moving was difficult but just as i thought, it turned out to be a much better fit for us.  Draper is a young area with a lot of families.  in the few short months we have been here, we have grown quite a bit.  2010 has brought us so many new faces,  also this was a year of seminars.  we have had three seminars this year and all of them were in my opinion, incredible with the best instructors in the world.  this past year we have made so many new friends and have been amazed with all of the love and support our wonderful students have shown us.  we have so many good people and we are blessed to know everyone of you.  2010 has been a year of change and a year of new ideas.  Many of these ideas have come from all of you.  we look forward to 2011 and intend on improving everything.  we will be adding more classes, more seminars and outdoor classes.  we will be having a weekend seminar in the mountains with all students and their families.  many, many more exciting things to come.  thanks for your support and lets make 2011 a great year for all.

What The Hell is Krav Maga?

Post By Steve Spencer -  http://www.utahmartialart.com for videos.

What the Hell is Krav Maga?

I think a lot of us in the martial arts community may be in roughly the same boat when it comes to Krav Maga…

I have watched it on Human Weapon, and on fight Science.  I was intrigued.  It appears to be very serious… very aggressive.  Tailored to be effective against weapons, and to really disable an opponent.  Definitely not sport.

But that’s what I have gleaned from TV.  It left me unsure what the art was really about.  It left me Krav curious, and wondering, “What the hell is Krav Maga really?”

Well, Paul Evans of Paul Evans Martial arts invited my son and I out to a six hour seminar with one of the top Krav Maga teachers in the country.  I don’t intend to imply to be an expert.  But this writeup is my opinion on Krav Maga after that experience.
Not just unarmed:

One of the first eye opening items during our training was that Krav Maga is not just about defense from weapons.  Krav Maga incorporates the usage of weapons as well.  In particular is the hand-gun.  As we trained there were many times when most arts might refer to the “left hand” or the “right hand” or even “strong hand” or “dominant hand.”  But in our training for Krav Maga the hands and feet were referred to as “gun hand side” and “non gun hand.”  similarly we would address the “gun side leg” or “non gun side leg.”

Krav Maga has strong punches, elbows, knees, and kicks.  Obviously taking many of its elements from a Muay Thai base.  But we also spent time drilling on being able to draw and fire quickly and effectively, as well as using our kicks and strikes to gain enough distance to fend off a knife and go for our firearm.
The concept of Self Defense:

One of the other things that really struck me during our training is that it made me drastically rethink the concept of “Self Defense.”  This term is so broad, and means so many different things to just as many people.  But if you look at most Martial Arts, and what is meant by “self defense” I think you have to look at what is the realistic expectation of most of its practicers as to how and when they will actually be likely to use it.

Be it Karate, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, or even MMA, most of these arts train people with an expectation that they will either use this in a sport setting, or that they will use it if they are bullied, picked on, or need to get into a bit of a scrap in a bar or parking lot.  Yes, there are elements of knife or gun defense in most of these arts, but these are secondary.  In Krav Maga they are at the forefront.

Based on what we saw, and did with our new friends that day, I would not refer to Krav Maga as “self defense.”  I think that we already have to many ideas as to what that means.  What we saw struck me much more as “Life Retention”.  If you asked most of the people we were training with when they felt they would be likely to use their skills, I would guess that the huge majority would respond with something along the lines of, “When someone is trying to take my life.”

This was pervasive in the training.  At one point I have to admit I was talking rather that listening.  In most arts I would have been chastised with a “Be respectful and listen,” or something similar.  The whispered message here was, “Be quiet.  We’re trying to save your life here.”

Training is intense.  We used Shock Knifes that would arc and pop like a taser to let you know they meant business, and would give you a good electrical bite if you let your attacker get too close.  This is meant to train you to live when someone intends otherwise.
Where it fits:

I think that each martial art has its place.  I have written recently on why I chose the art of Judo.  There are other reasons to choose other arts.  If you want to fight in a cage, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu may be the best mix there is (although I would add in something with take-down skills.)  So where does Krav Maga fit?

In my opinion, Krav Maga is an excellent design of “You are trying to take my life.  I intend to very aggressively counter attack you such that I can eliminate your threat and escape or so that I can kill you instead.”

Thank you to Paul, and to our new friends for the great experience.

November 20th Seminar

One word.  Wow.  James and crew always give a good seminar but this one was beyond the normal.  it was amazing from start to finish.  the event was held in one of the coolest venues in town.  The Rail Event Center.  we had a ton of room and were able to set up several different areas to run some of our shock knives and ram pistol stress drills.  the seminar was a great balance of good technique mixed in with combatives.  in some of the seminars we have had in the past, you almost learnt to much info for one day.  this was just right.  we worked on building up basics first, then weapons drawing and disarms, then shooting and finally added knife training.  My favorite part was the curtain drill where a attacker would run at you through a curtain with a shock knives and you tried to get your gun out of the holster in time to shoot him.  it did not always go as plans.  one guy not only got tasted but landed in the garbage can.  fun as hell.  the seminar included 3rd party protection against a knife wielding assailant.  that was fun.  to top the day off, James had set up a entire course in and outside of the building where attackers would be waiting to shoot you or charge at you with a shock knife.  this was the funnest part of the day and many got shocked and kept fighting.  awesome seminar with some of the best instructors in the United States.  we will have them back again this summer for sure. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event work and a big thanks to Jamie for getting the Rail Center for us.  James and Mike, thanks for the extra effort and time you put in.  the seminar went a hour over and you guys gave us every penny worth.  thanks brother and we are looking forward to having you back soon.

Jiu jitsu Tournament results

UPDATE!!!! I recently received news that Archie grappled against two opponents and did extremely well in his division. Way to go Archie and keep up the good work!!!

A big shout out to Archie, T.j and Vinnie who all competed and represented our studio’s Jiu jitsu program this past weekend. I am very proud of all of you guys and your work ethic is inspiring to us all. T.j took first in the Advanced Teenage Division and went on later and took first in the overall teenage division. Way to go!! Vinnie also took first place in his division, not bad considering he hasn’t been doing Jiu jitsu for too long. I was unfortunately unable to attend and coach these guys but a big shout out to them and there continuing success. I will update this post once i found out how Archie did, but knowing him i’m sure he did great. When you see these guys next week make sure you congratulate them. Everyone should try a tournament at least one time. You won’t regret it!
