Muay Thai at Krav Maga SLC

Things keep getting better here at Krav Maga SLC.  Not only are we in our new place, but now we have a excellent Muay Thai Instructor teaching on Tuesday nights at 8:30.  The instructors name is James Foster.  He has trained and taught Muay Thai for many years under the Head Master at MTI (Muay Thai Institute) in slc, Utah.  We are excited to have James.  Muay Thai is one of the best, if not the best, striking arts there is.  the close quarter combat of Krav Maga is very similar to the devastating elbows and knees in Muay Thai.  Please come by and check James out.  Now we have Krav Maga, Gracie Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Wrestling and Muay Thai.  what else could you possible want.

the Newness Factor

By Krav Maga Alliance founder - John Whitman

I think this is beneficial for all of our students to read!!!!

Thumb down and forward. That’s all it took to release the strap and draw the weapon from its holster. Thumb down and forward.
But I couldn’t do it in the roughly 1.7 seconds it took for the attacker to cover twenty-plus feet.  I had to abandon the weapon and go right to Krav Maga’s regular stick defense.  You can watch the video here.

Even after 19 years of Krav Maga stress training, it still amazes me how small changes in circumstance can affect performance and reaction time.
Now, to discuss this specific situation, let’s make a few basic assumptions.  First, that I am a reasonably good athlete with reasonably good hand-eye coordination.  Second, that the borrowed holster I was using was secure but not complicated to operate.  (I had, in fact, practiced the simple release movement several times while waiting my turn in the stress drill.) Third, that I have reasonably good reaction time when dealing with Krav Maga stick and knife defenses (you will have to take this on faith; I don’t claim to be perfect, but I’ve done this sort of thing for a long time).
The reason I make these assumptions is to identify what I think is the one important factor: the situation was new. It wasn’t complex (the holster was easy to operate).  Nor was it particularly stressful for me. It was just new. That “newness” was all that was needed to slow my reaction time enough to change my defense.
This is true of all of us. Every new situation tests our abilities.  To keep our training true, and to maintain a decent state of awareness, we need to constantly change up our environment and circumstances.  To push yourself, try changing up any of the following factors as often as you can:
• Time of day
• Clothing
• Altitude
• Energy level
• Flooring
• Operating space
• Size/strength of opponent
• Resistance level of opponent
• Lighting
Remember, the environment might not be inherently difficult, but the very newness of it will be a factor.  The more we take ourselves out of our comfort zone, the better prepared we will be if we are ever confronted by violence.

Gun Seminar - June 26th

Our June 26th Gun Seminar was awesome. everyone did so well and I hope that they all left here learning something new. we focused on basic gun defense with combatives and Gun retention which was taught by Dennis Kennedy. Hopefully nest time we hold a seminar, we can get into more advanced gun defense like hostage and third party protection. I also wanted to show more knife defense but only so much time in a day. the curtain drill at the end was fun. scary when someone rushes at you unexpected and you have to make a defense or draw your weapon. the lights out and music helped set this up. thanks everyone and we will do this again soon.

womens seminar

wink Krav Maga Slc held a womens only self defense seminar on Saturday May 15th 2010.  the seminar was a huge success.  we had over 35 women attend.  it was great to see women become empowered and learn that they can fight back.  the whole seminar was based on giving them a fighting chance.  some of the ladies were more agressive than many of our male students.  My wife (who has never trained, even being married to me for 21 years) did great.  at one point she was pushed against a wall and choked.  she was pushed hard and saw stars.  i was thinking oh shit, she will never let me live this one down.  i was wrong,  she turned in, made the defese and knee this poor guy in the balls.  awesome.  we also had the ladies work on eye strike by cutting oranges in half and finger striking them.  it was a mess and they were all so damn sticky.  bummer ( a bunch of sticky girls- torture) !!!  thanks to everyone for there support.  we will do this again soon.

domestic violence

This is a topic that i wished never came up.  too many women are abused by men who well are not real men.  I have never understood the mindset behind abuse.  one of the many reasons i teach Krav Maga is to empower women.  No one should ever have to go through abuse.  by learning self defense you will at least have a fighting chance.  the stats are alarming - 1 out 6 women will experience violence against them during their life.  how many more are there that don’t get reported?  By the time the law gets invloved is often to late.  Take charge of your life.  TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  Please come and join our womens self defense seminar this Sat.  you won’t regret it.

this was sent to me via facebook.  I couldn’t say it better.

While you SCREAM at your woman, there’s a man wishing he could talk softly to her ear… While you HUMILIATE, OFFEND and INSULT her, there’s a man flirting with her and reminding her how wonderful she is. While you HURT your woman, there’s a man wishing he could make love to her. While you make your woman CRY there’s a man stealing smiles from her… Post this on your wall if you’re against Domestic Violence
